My Unforgettable Experience in Sea Tecaher Batch 10

Hello, my name is Susi Aslamiyah. I am from an English language education program at Universitas Pakuan Bogor. I had the opportunity to join the sea teacher program in Thailand at Udon Thani Rajabhat University. It was my first time studying abroad so I was excited and worried. Before I went to Thailand, I had a lot of worries like how I would be there, how to communicate, how to adapt, and other things. It's just overthinking we never know before we try. In fact, this program was very memorable for me so here is my story during the sea teacher batch 10 in Thailand.

In the first week, my activities were an opening ceremony and school observation. The opening ceremony was held on the fourth day 6 November. Three groups from two countries participated in the sea teacher program at UDRU, two from Indonesia and one from the Philippines.  I was so excited and it touched my heart I never thought I could introduce myself here by wearing batik clothes from Indonesia, it's my dream come true. After the opening ceremony, I made new friends from the Philippines and Thailand. It made me happy with the warm welcome.

And in the first week, the activities I did were going to visit the school, which is where I practice teaching, and also classroom observation. The name of this school is Udonpittayakun School. It's a public secondary school with around 4,500 students and there are 45 students in each class. They said Udonpittayakun School is the biggest and the best school in  Udon Thani. Learning activities conducted in the classroom are very interesting and technology-based, teachers tend to provide exercises using learning applications in the form of games and applications used are Kahoot, Blooket, etc. The learning method used by my co-teacher in class is active learning.

Not only observation and teaching practice, but in this program I learned Thai culture by visiting tourist attractions in Udon Thani. In the first week, I and my friends visited Wat Phothisomphon, the Udon Thani Museum, Nong Prajak Park, and the Thai-Chinese Cultural Centre.

In the second week, I started teaching practice. In one day I taught two classes with 50 minutes for each class. On the first day, I taught comparative & superlatives. The next day, I taught the adverb of degree and the adverb of frequency. Before teaching I needed to make a lesson plan and then give it to the CO teacher. When making the lesson plan, the CO teacher gave me the freedom to make the lesson plan format as I had learned in Indonesia so the CO Teacher only gave the sourcebook used during the lesson and this made it easier for me to make the lesson plan. During the process of making lesson plans and learning media, I did not encounter any major difficulties, because before teaching practice I conducted class observations first so that I could find out how the learning process was carried out, the media used, and the characteristics of the students in the class. What I have mentioned above is that teachers tend to use learning applications that are technology-based, therefore when I practiced teaching I used applications for evaluation and I thought this made it easier for me with very adequate facilities. However, there is a little obstacle when practicing teaching, and time management. I thought 50 minutes was a long time to teach in reality, it is a very short time for 40 students so there are some activities that I skip because the time is so fast. The lesson I take from this is not all students have the same ability so I have to pay more attention to the questions and the time given to work on them.

Teks:

Andre, my study buddy

Andre loves studying. For his study success, First, he sets study goals. He often develops a study plan. He regularly writes down homework assignments and breaks down the assignments into smaller tasks. He always does homework right after school. He believes he can achieve his goals by doing these small steps. Second, he manages his time well. He usually makes a schedule and uses a weekly to-do list to keep him on track. He also plans a specific time for studying. He frequently sets reminders on his cell phone or on sticky notes. He doesn’t like wasting time so he limits his screen time, too. Although he is busy studying, he always has enough sleep and free time.

On the second week of November 15, I and my friends attended the Loy Krathong festival in Nong Prajak Park Udon Thani. The Loy Krathong Festival is a Thai cultural festival held once a year in November. The festival is an expression of gratitude and apology to the goddess of water. At the festival, one puts a krathong decorated with flowers and candles into the river and according to Thai beliefs when going to put krathong into the river it is recommended first to pray for what is desired. There were so many people there and the place where the Loy Krathong festival in Udon Thani is held is Nong Prajak Park because it has the largest river in Udon Thani. When visiting the festival, I was allowed to wear traditional Thai clothes. It was an honor for me to witness the Loy Krathong festival wearing traditional Thai clothes.

The second week of the city tour was to visit the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, the Pottery Molding, and Painting Center. It's a historical archaeological site related to human civilization and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In the third week, there was a sports event at Udonpittayakun School. This sports event was held for one week, and there were several sports competitions. These competitions are not carried out on one field simultaneously, there are approximately 4 fields and all fields are used for competitions. Students and teachers can enliven the activity. The main of this sports event is on the last day, Friday. During the sports event, there's no class. So, all school members participate in sports events.

Finally, in the last week, I did a campus tour, attended one of the classes in the English department, and prepared for the closing ceremony. I am very grateful to be able to participate in this program, this experience has become one of the most memorable experiences in my life. This is my first experience teaching at a secondary school, it's challenging and I think I have not felt satisfied and have not felt successful in teaching because there are still many shortcomings that I have to improve, for example giving attention to students, organizing and leading the class well with a variety of student characteristics. But I learned a lot from this experience and it gave me insight. I hope in the future I can be better. In this program, I not only learned teaching practices. There are a lot of international students and it's like I can see the world. I learned about the culture and sometimes I and my friends talk about the differences between us, it's interesting. Also, this program broke my fear and worry about trying good things for example studying abroad we never know if we never try. In fact, the worries that I always thought before turned out to be not that scary, and saw that I could get through it. Even though the fear is not completely gone, let's try with fear. So never be afraid to try good things, and don't be defeated by fear that makes you not want to try.
